From a young age, Mashud Sumon was captivated by the power of storytelling. His journey into the world of theatre began in 2000 when he joined Loko Natyadal, one of Bangladesh’s most prominent theatre troupes. His early performances quickly established him as a versatile actor with a deep passion for the stage.
Mashud’s dedication and talent propelled him to take on challenging roles in various acclaimed productions. His portrayal in over 250 performances of “Kanjush” (based on Molière’s The Miser) solidified his reputation as one of the most committed actors in Bangladeshi theatre. He also brought to life complex characters in productions like Majhrater Manushera (Nocturnal Wanderer), Hamlet, Lilaboti Akhyan, Amra Teen Jon, Rathayatra, Toposshi O Torongini (The Hermit and the Harlot), Shilpi and many more.
Beyond his role as an actor, Mashud Sumon’s expertise extended to stage management and production coordination. He played a crucial role in overseeing major productions and managing logistics for international performances. Notably, he coordinated Toposshi O Torongini at the AACT WorldFest 2022 in Florida, USA, showcasing Bangladeshi theatre on an international platform.
Mashud’s passion for theatre also translated into his work as a theatre organizer. Through his involvement with Loko Natyadal and the People’s Theatre Association (PTA), he has been instrumental in organizing and coordinating numerous national and international theatre festivals and workshops, including the National Children & Youth Theatre Festival. His leadership in these initiatives has provided a nurturing environment for young talents, integrating theatre into the lives of children across Bangladesh.
Mashud Sumon’s contributions have not been confined to national borders. As a cultural ambassador, he has represented Bangladesh in various international theatre festivals and cultural exchanges, including events in the USA, Canada, China, India, Monaco, Nepal, Russia and many more. Through these efforts, he has showcased Bangladesh’s rich theatrical traditions to global audiences, earning recognition and respect for the nation’s cultural heritage.
Expanding his creative pursuits, Mashud has also made significant strides in filmmaking. As a passionate filmmaker, he has directed impactful films and documentaries, such as Dhusharjatra (Dusky Voyage), which garnered awards at international film festivals. His documentary on Ataur Rahman further exemplifies his commitment to preserving and celebrating the stories of Bangladesh’s cultural icons.
In addition to his roles as an actor, director, and cultural ambassador, Mashud Sumon is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of artists.
